Terminology Glossary

TermCategoryBusiness Definition
Manufacturing Order (MO)Production DocumentAn authorized internal instruction to produce a specific quantity of a finished or semi-finished item within a defined time window.
Work Order (WO)Production DocumentA child execution unit derived from a Manufacturing Order, often assigned to a specific work center, shift, or routing operation.
Bill of Materials (BOM)Engineering StructureA structured list of all raw materials, components, sub-assemblies, and quantities required to produce one unit of a parent item.
Multi-Level / Indented BOMEngineering StructureA hierarchical BOM representation that expands sub-assemblies into their own component requirements, showing parent-child relationships across multiple levels.
Phantom BOMEngineering StructureA transient sub-assembly BOM that exists only for engineering clarity; it is never stocked as WIP and is exploded directly into raw components at production time.
RoutingEngineering StructureThe ordered sequence of operations required to manufacture an item, including work centers, setup times, run times, and tooling requirements.
OperationEngineering StructureA single step within a routing, performed at a specific work center, with defined setup time, run time, and labor/machine requirements.
Work CenterShop-Floor ResourceA production resource where operations are performed; may represent a department, cell, machine group, or single machine.
MachineShop-Floor ResourceA specific piece of equipment within a work center that executes operations and consumes capacity.
Tooling / FixtureShop-Floor ResourceAuxiliary equipment required to perform an operation, such as dies, molds, jigs, or cutting tools.
CapacityShop-Floor ResourceThe available production time of a work center or machine within a calendar period, typically measured in hours or units.
Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)Shop-Floor MetricA composite metric of equipment performance calculated as Availability × Performance × Quality.
Setup TimeTime ElementThe non-productive time required to prepare a work center or machine before production can begin.
Run TimeTime ElementThe productive time required to process one unit or batch at an operation.
Teardown TimeTime ElementThe non-productive time required to clean, reset, or release a work center after production ends.
Takt TimeTime ElementThe maximum allowable time to produce one unit to meet customer demand rate.
Cycle TimeTime ElementThe actual time elapsed between the completion of two consecutive units.
Staging AreaInventory LocationA designated production location where raw materials and components are reserved or physically placed before being consumed.
Floor StockInventory LocationUnbin-tracked material held at the production line for immediate consumption, often managed through backflushing.
BackflushingConsumption MethodAn automated method of deducting component quantities from inventory based on finished output and the approved BOM, without individual issue transactions.
Manual Material ConsumptionConsumption MethodA method where each component issue is recorded individually, typically against a specific work order and operation.
Scrap FactorProduction MetricA planned percentage or quantity of expected material loss during an operation, applied to gross material requirements.
Expected YieldProduction MetricThe planned output quantity from a given input, accounting for scrap factors and conversion efficiencies.
Actual YieldProduction MetricThe real output quantity achieved from a production run, used for variance analysis.
By-ProductProduction OutputA secondary output of a production process that has value but is not the primary purpose of the order.
Co-ProductProduction OutputA primary output jointly produced with another primary output, where both carry significant production intent and cost allocation.
Finished Goods (FG)Production OutputCompleted products ready for sale, transfer, or storage.
Work in Progress (WIP)Production OutputPartially completed items that have entered production but are not yet finished.
ScrapProduction OutputMaterial or output that fails quality standards and cannot be economically reworked.
ReworkProduction OutputDefective output that can be corrected through an additional production process to meet specifications.
QuarantineQuality StatusA holding status for output pending inspection, testing, or disposition decision.
Goods Issue Note (GIN)Inventory DocumentThe document authorizing the removal of materials from inventory for production consumption.
Goods Received Note (GRN)Inventory DocumentThe document recording the receipt of finished goods into inventory from production.
Lot / BatchTraceability UnitA identifiable quantity of material or product produced under uniform conditions and assigned a common identifier.
Serial Number (S/N)Traceability UnitA unique identifier assigned to a single unit of product for individual tracking.
Labor TicketTime DocumentA record of operator time spent on a specific operation, including setup, run, and indirect activities.
VarianceCost MetricThe difference between standard/planned values and actual values for material, labor, machine, or overhead.
Compensating OrderCorrection DocumentA subsequent manufacturing order created to correct, adjust, or rework a completed production run without altering the original ledger.

Distinctions That Matter

Manufacturing Order vs. Work Order

AspectManufacturing Order (MO)Work Order (WO)
ScopeEntire production run for an itemA single operation or subset within the routing
AuthorizationCreated from demand signal (sales, forecast, replenishment)Derived from MO routing explosion
OwnershipProduction planningShop-floor execution
TrackingQuantity ordered, produced, scrappedOperation-level time, status, and yield

Phantom BOM vs. Stocked Sub-Assembly

AspectPhantom BOMStocked Sub-Assembly
Physical StockNever held as inventoryHeld as WIP or semi-finished goods
PlanningExploded directly into raw componentsMay be planned and produced independently
Use CaseEngineering grouping with no operational meaningIntermediate product with independent demand or supply

Backflushing vs. Manual Consumption

AspectBackflushingManual Consumption
TimingDeducted automatically upon output reportingRecorded at the time of physical issue
AccuracyBest for low-variance, high-volume environmentsRequired for high-value, serialized, or lot-controlled materials
ControlRelies on standard BOM quantitiesAllows capture of actual quantities per issue
